- 13c., from Anglo-Fr. bustous "rough (road)," from O.Fr. boitous "noisy," or perhaps O.Fr. boiteaux "curved;" origin obscure, perhaps akin to boast. Originally "rough, coarse" (as of food); used of persons from 1568.
